Dear contributors to GPAW and ASE

In order to ensure license compatibility in the future as well as with existing dependencies, it is necessary for ASE to be released under "LGPLv2 or any later version". Presently ASE is under "LGPLv3 only", which is incompatible with GPLv2, and which might lead to problems with software under future versions of (L)GPL.

GPAW must be released under "GPLv3 or any later version" for similar reasons (version 3 is necessary to include code from libxc). Presently GPAW is "GPLv2 only".

ASAP will be released under "GPLv3 or any later version". The version has previously not been specified consistently.

Note that these changes pertain only to the versioning of the licenses, and not the type of license. This change should make similar changes in the future unnecessary.

If you have any issue with this, please let us know as soon as possible and before April 12 so we can resolve the problem. Otherwise we expect to make the change soon after.

Best regards
