Yes, it's easy to get trouble if the package is installed at the same time 
as an svn-checkout.  If e.g. PYTHONPATH points to the svn checkout, then 
the gpaw/tools as well as the build directory must be correctly included 
in (PYTHON)PATH also.

Here are the variables needed to have an svn-checkout:

PYTHONPATH:
   gpaw
   gpaw/build/bin[architecture-name]

PATH:
   gpaw/tools

and possibly GPAW_SETUP_PATH.

The package requires no such environment variables, and indeed might break 
if you set them (except for GPAW_SETUP_PATH which is meant to be able to 
include anything).
