Just an addition to what you wrote. Debian has a public build status
page for packages, and for the case of python$version-scipy the link
is here:
https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=python-scipy
Scipy seems to only create problems when compiled on very uncommon
architectures. Judging from this, I would suppose that having it as an
ASE dependence would not create too much trouble as you mentioned.
